The collection contains speeches by Adams, newspaper clippings, film and audio recordings, correspondence, photographs, newsletters, awards and plaques, as well as campaign signs and other items mostly focused on the period of Adams's political life when he was most active, the bulk of the materials ending with his lieutenant governorship in 1975.
- Biographical / historical:
Florida native Thomas "Tom" Burton Adams was a Florida Senator from 1956-1960, Florida Secretary of State from 1961-1971, and served as lieutenant governor during Reubin Askew's first term as Governor (1971-1975). Prior to his political career, Adams worked in the dairy industry after returning from college at the University of Michigan. He also maintained a farm and was involved in the lumber industry and property management during this time. After a near-impeachment in 1973 mostly scuttled him from the political arena, Adams remained a slightly eccentric yet endearing public figure, maintaining his flair for organizational involvement and was even chosen by former political opponent Claude Kirk in 1978 to become his statewide campaign chairman.
