Background
- Scope and content:
The Allen Lastinger Collection of Ephemera contains a broad array of ephemera from the late nineteenth through the twentieth century, collected by Allen Lastinger, most of which is about Florida. It has been divided into three series.
Series I. General Florida Ephemera contains pamphlets, magazines, brochures, photographs, postcards, and other miscellaneous ephemera covering multiple cities, the state, or region. The material is mostly focused on tourism, and is arranged chronologically. Included in this series is a scrapbook of postcards and stereographs, which was gifted to Lastinger by one of his daughters. For preservation, copies were made of the scrapbook pages before the items were removed from the pages.
Series II. Local Florida Ephemera contains images, postcards, booklets, and other promotional material about specific locations (town, city, body of water, or county) in Florida. This material is organized alphabetically by location.
Series III. Other Ephemera contains Florida ephemera that did not fit into the other series, such as the Florida East Coast Railway and images of Florida governors. Also included in this series is ephemera about other places.
- Biographical / historical:
In the late nineteenth century, due largely to the efforts of manifest destiny, Florida had begun to market itself to Northerners as an Eden-like hub of adventure that prompted tourism. Many of these visitors were men looking for adventure in hunting and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the natural resources. This growth was further increased by the land boom in the early 1920s. This land boom and population growth led to the increase in businesses and banks in Florida during the era. Following the Great Depression, tourism continued as a primary means of economic growth, becoming one of the primary supports in reviving the state economy.
