Background

Scope and content:

This collection centers around Joe Gould (formerly Goldstein), a soldier in the intelligence section of the 25th Bomb Group and 325th Photographic Wing in England, and his wife, Shirley Gould, on the homefront in Chicago. It includes letters, photographs and some of their corresponding negatives, a photo album of letters and V-Mail, newspaper clippings, event brochures, various personnel records, and ephemera from the service and the homefront, including drawings, decorative dog tags, and ration cards.

Biographical / historical:

Joseph Gould (originally Goldstein) was born on November 20, 1913. He enlisted in 1942, and served in the 25th Bomb Group and the 325th Photographic Wing in England for the duration of the war. He declined to attend officer school, and instead was assigned to the intelligence service. Outside of the war, he worked for the Naturalization and Immigration Service (now the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service) and several family-owned and operated textile factories. Shirley Gould was born on August 3, 1917. She and Joe lived in Chicago, where she stayed during the war. She worked various secretary jobs before and during the War, one being connected with the Manhattan Project under Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. She was also a leading part of a group of women in Chicago called the Servicemen's Wives Club. After the war, she received her Master's degree in Social Work and became a private counselor. Joe and Shirley were married in 1940. Their name change occured between 1945-1948, a common practice by Jewish-Americans to separate themselves from racial prejudices.
