Background

Scope and content:

Charles Robert Burrows served in the US Navy aboard the USS California and USS Tennessee in the Pacific Theater (PTO) during World War II. Before he was inducted in 1939, Burrows received four years of naval ROTC training at the University of Minnesota. Onboard the California and the Tennessee, he served as a gun division officer, a secondary battery officer, an air defense officer, and an officer-of-the-deck. During his time in the Navy, Burrows participated in 14 major operations in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded a Citation Ribbon, and his ship, the USS Tennessee, received a Navy Unit Citation. After the war, he was released to inactive duty with the rank of naval lieutenant. The collection includes a veteran's questionnaire and a manuscript. In the manuscript, Burrows recounts his experiences during the various naval campaigns and his daily life aboard ship.
