Background

Scope and content:

This box contains 35 photographs from the Warsaw Ghetto. Most depict street scenes and people with personal possessions. Others display workers with machinery, and one surveys a wood-making class for students. Several offer insights into construction of the ghetto wall.

One rare photograph shows a group of Jewish men working to pave a street (Sleeve 9, photograph 1). A member of the Judenrat is shown overseeing this work. The Judenrat consisted of Jewish people implementing German decrees and directives. In the effort to prolong their own lives, the Judenrat often turned on Jewish people and, as a result, were despised by those in the ghetto.

Several individuals in these photographs are shown wearing a white armband and the Star of David (not visible in any photograph). All Jewish people, in the Warsaw Ghetto, were required by the Nazis to wear a white armband with the Star of David.
