Background

Scope and content:

Included in the Basdekian collection is a memoir, written by Navy medic William Silliphant. The memoir starts with his capture at Manila, by Japanese soldiers. He is sent to Bilibid as one of the medical officers. He tells of the hardships, not only involving the physical aspect of war (starvation, beri-beri, malayria), but also of the mental aspect too. Silliphant kept a journal for most of his stay at Bilibid, but writes these memoirs after liberation. The chapters are dedicated to certain events or situations. The chapters tell of his farewell to Canacao, capture at Santu Scholastka, arriving in Bilibid, practicing medicine without medicine, medical treatment of Japanese, Tenko, the food situation, daily routine, outside work camps, prisoner drafts for Japan, the moment the camp realized liberation was coming, and the return to the Navy. He also tells of an American POW camp where he sees the U.S. honoring the Geneva Convention and has mixed feelings.
