Background
- Scope and content:
This collection relates to George Robert Carr who served in Europe during World War II. This collection includes two manuscripts. The first manuscript details Robert C. Mowrer's experiences serving with the 106th infantry Regiment, 27th Division, in the Pacific Theater. The second manuscript details German soldier Gunther Schmidt's account of the Battle of Huertgen Forest from the time he was sent there to when his battalion is defeated. Second manuscript includes maps.
- Biographical / historical:
Robert C. Mowrer served as a Private First Class with the 106th infantry Regiment 27th Infantry Division, during World War II. He knew the donor, George Robert Carr, who initially mistook the account of Mowrer's platoon for his own. This manuscript detail's Morwer's experiences in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Morwer describes being shipped to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii before heading towards Japan. He prepares for attacks on Saipan and sleeps on the decks to be ready in case there is an attack at night. He describes being on the frontlines of fighting on Guam. He describes taking over land as they move in and dealing with sniper after sniper along with how many men they lost along the way. He also mentions looting of dead soldiers and a final attack in which he was wounded and later awarded the Purple Heart Medal. Carr gives no account of where he obtained the manuscript, only that Carr knew Mowrer.
