Background
- Scope and content:
This collection documents the work and activities of the Florida State University Black Alumni Association. It contains The Drum newsletters, programs for association reunions and award ceremonies, news clippings and FSU publications regarding the organization, and association bylaws. Also documented are issues at FSU regarding racial diversity and inclusion, such as controversies surrounding diversity in the FSU Law School, FSU professor Glayde Witney's comments regarding race, and an instance of police harassment on campus.
- Biographical / historical:
The Florida State University Black Alumni Association was founded in 1983 as a chartered constituent of the FSU Alumni Association, after the first Black Alumni Reunion was held in Tallahassee, Florida. Their primary goals are to serve, involve, and inform Black alumni, and to build a network of Black alumni and friends. The Association advocates for activities that will have a positive impact on Black student life at FSU. They also provide input into university activities related to the recruitment, admission, retention, graduation, and placement of Black students, as well as in the recruitment and retention of Black employees at the university.
