Background

Scope and content:

This collection relates to Sander Buchman who served as an Electronic Technician's Mate Third Class in the U.S. Navy aboard U.S.S. AMC(V)2 Minesweeper on the East Coast of the U.S. during World War II. The collection consists of a U.S. Navy winter jacket and military personnel documents.

Biographical / historical:

Sander Buchman was born on February 21, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in Pittsburgh and moved to Greenwich, Connecticut in 1979. A graduate of Cornell University, Buchman interrupted his college studies at the age of eighteen in the United States Navy. He served on a minesweeper along the east coast in the last years of World War II.

During a long career, first at RCA, then at IBM, Buchman developed computers used in military jets and in space crafts. A computer he worked on was used in Skylab, America's first experimental space station, and on the Space Shuttle. He became a top advisor to IBM's senior executives. A member of the Old Greenwich Yacht Club, Buchman was an avid and skilled sailor, well-acquainted with the Atlantic waters off the US and Canadian coasts, and with the Pacific waters around the San Juan Islands in Washington. He was also an accomplished musician, and, along with his wife Norma Kerlin, a founder of the Tri-State Quintet, which played in the 1980s and 1990s. Buchman was the principal oboe player. He passed away on May 6, 2005, in Greenwich Hospital.
