Background
- Scope and content:
This collection contains a scrapbook of materials collected by the creator during her time at Southern College from 1921-1924. Included are photographs, cards, and ephemera reflecting the life of a college student in the early 1920s. Also included is an autograph book, which contains messages from friends and peers.
- Biographical / historical:
Ellen Chappell was a 1924 graduate of Florida Southern College (then known as Southern College). During her time here, the college faced many challenges, including recovery from the fire that had destroyed much of the Sutherland (now Palm Harbor) campus, the hurricane and fire at the temporary Clearwater Beach campus, and the subsequent move to Lakeland in 1922.
While we do not know much about Ellen's life before and after her time at Southern, the materials in her scrapbook as well as information contained in the Interlaken yearbook, describe a hard-working and well regarded student. She was the Secretary of the Erolethean Literary Society in 1921 and 1923; member of the Epworth League Cabinet in 1921-1922 and 1923-1924; President of the Erolethean Society in 1922; Vice-President of the Class of 1923-1924; Treasurer of the Dramatic Club in 1924; and Editor of the Interlaken in 1924. She was the chairman of the Y.W.C.A. Recreation Committee in 1924.
Her yearbook characteriszation is as follows: "We have hunted in vain for a word to express the combination of daintiness not too formal, or adroitness well directed, and of several other things. The idea is that we don't want to stop by just saying 'a sweet girl.' Here is a piece of friendly advice: Some folks not only fail to realize what can happen in the twinkle of an eye, but also what can happen by the twinkle of an eye. So, 'Be thou cautious of those two eyes, Which starlike sparkle in their skies."
