Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains one scrapbook created by Southern College student Catherine Young in the 1920s. It presents an intomate view of student life in the 1920s. Of special interest are photos of Southern College when it was temporarily located at Clearwater immediately prior to the 1922 move to Lakeland, as well as a pristine copy of The Southern (student newspaper) from February 4, 1921. Also included is a copy of an early Alma Mater for Southern College, as well as newspaper clippings, programs, and ephemera related to events at both Clearwater and Lakeland.

Biographical / historical:

Not much is known about Catherine Ensign Young beyond what is contained in her scrapbook. She was a student at Southern College at the Clearwater Campus and the new (current) campus in Lakeland. She graduated in 1922. She was a member of the chorus and a pianist, and on May 11, 1923, she was noted as having given the only post-graduate student recital up to that time. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Young of Lakeland.
