Background
- Scope and content:
The Bush-Gore Election Contest Newspaper Collection contains a complete run of Sun Sentinel newspapers dating from November 9 to December 14, 2000 documenting the Bush-Gore presidential election and the Florida manual vote recount. The newspapers provide insight into national and local opinions on the recount occurring in Broward County.
- Biographical / historical:
The 2000 United States presidential election recount in Florida occurred after the 2000 United States presidential election on November 7, 2000. Candidate George W. Bush led the election-night vote count over Al Gore in Florida by 1,784 votes. The small margin produced an automatic recount under Florida state law, which began the day after the election and ended on December 9, 2000.
Broward County's recount gained national attention due to the voting machine's confusing ballot design and tendancy to produce incomplete punch markson the ballots, resulting in "hanging chads." Broward County Judge Robert A. Rosenberg examined ballots in need of interpretation, often with hanging chads, with a magnifying glass. Photographs of Judge Rosenberg looking through his magnifying glass at ballots became one of the most iconic images representing the Florida recount.
Craig Case collected the newspapers in this collection. Case was out to sea during the Florida recount and returned to a stack of complete, unopened newspapers documenting the events. He maintained the newspapers in thier original state and donated them to the Broward County Historical Archives in 2025.
