Background

Scope and content:

The Hollywood Sun-Tattler Collection contains 588 reels of microfilm documenting back issues of the Hollywood Sun-Tattler (later the Sun-Tattler and Hollywood Sun) dating from 1931 to 1991. It also contains photographs dating from 1942 to 1991 that were part of the newspaper's photograph morgue, or photograph files.

Biographical / historical:

In 1942 the Hollywood Sun-Tattler was formed as part of a merger between the Hollywood Sun and the South Broward Tattler. Colonel Wallace Stevens created the South Broward Tattler in 1932 and purchased the Hollywood News in 1942. The Hollywood Sun, was originally owned by T.S. McNicol, a former postmaster in Hollywood, Florida in 1935.

The Hollywood Sun-Tattler was published twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1942-1952 and three days a week in 1957. In 1957, the paper was published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

In 1965, The Hollywood Sun-Tattler transferred ownership from G. William (Bill) McCall to media house E.W. Scripps Company. The paper underwent multiple name changes including the Sun-Tattler in 1983 and the Hollywood Sun in 1989.

Once-reporter Edward Wentworth, Jr., held the title of president from 1975 to 1985.

E. W. Scripps Company sold the Hollywood Sun in 1989 to DTH Media Incorporated and John Reynolds became the new publisher. The Hollywood Sun ceased printing on December 24, 1991. William Pollard, executive assistant to the editor of the Hollywood Sun, donated a microfilm set of the Hollywood Sun and the Hollywood Sun-Tattler to the Broward County Historical Commission on January 31, 1992. The materials are now part of the Broward County Historical Archives. Between 2014 and 2020 the Broward County Library Special Collections and Digitization team digitized the microfilm.
