- Biographical / historical:
Daniel McTier Johnson (b. 1922) began collecting the books in New York city during the 1960s while working for the postal service. Johnson's interest in the materials led him to return to school, eventually earning a master's degree in education with a certificate in African American Studies, and become an elementary teacher for New York City Public Schools. He put the majority of his private collection up for sale in 2001. The Broward County Library purchased the collection in order to prepare for the 2002 opening of the AARLCC Special Collections.
