Background

Scope and content:

This World War II collection relates to Covieau Rohlin and Rohlin's close wartime friendship with U.S. Army Air Corps Colonel Thomas Settle Voss. Voss served as base commander of MacDill Field, FL and 1st Advanced Air Depot Area in the European Theater.  The collection includes a captured framed lithograph of Le Mans-La Cathedrale St. Julien by Barday, 1933, MacDill Field Thunderbird magazines, Liberty magazine, unpublished memoirs of Colonel Voss, photographs of Voss, and military documents.

Biographical / historical:

Janet Covieau Rohlin was born on November 13, 1916, and passed away in Saint Johns, Florida on July 29, 1995.  During World War II, she worked as a civilian employee at MacDill Field, FL in supply which provided materials for engineers who worked on the Burma Road.  It was during this time that Rohlin developed a close friendship with Colonel Thomas Settle Voss.  After the war and up to the time of Voss's death, Rohlin assisted Voss with writing his memoirs.  After Voss's death, Rohlin preserved the draft documents she was provided by Voss.

Thomas Settle Voss was born in Walnut Grove, Stokes County, NC on November 4, 1892. Voss began his career in 1917 as a private and earned his commission and became a pilot.  Before the war, he served in Panama and the Philippines.  In May 1942, Voss was placed in command of MacDill Field near Tampa, FL. In September 1943, Voss was transferred to the 9th Air Force in England as Air Inspector. On April 2, 1944, in anticipation of the allied invasion of Europe, Voss assumed command of the 1st Advanced Air Depot Area. His service in the European campaign earned him the Bronze Star Medal and Legion of Merit.  After the war, Voss was assigned as commander of Keesler Field, MS and retired in December 1945. Voss passed away from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage on October 10, 1948, in Winston-Salem, NC and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  At the time of his death, Voss was working on completing his memoirs.  His draft memoir was sent as a series of letters to Janet Covieau Rohlin.
