Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains documents pertaining to the labor union United Automobile Workers (UAW) and its eventual unification with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) becoming the UAW-CIO. Included in this archive are negotiation research, group research in the specific fields, directories, and publications regarding wages, growth, and pension.

Biographical / historical:

The United Automobile Workers (UAW) was founded in 1935 in Detroit, Michigan under the original title of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The UAW found success after organizing several sit-down strikes, first in a General Motors Corporation plant in Atlanta, Georgia in 1936, and more famously in the Flint sit-down strike that began on December 29, 1936 and ending in early 1937. Their demands were that of most other unions: fair wage, pension, compensation, and work hours. Following the success of the General Motor strike, auto-workers working at Chrysler also initiated a sit-down strike which also ended with better wages, appointing the leaders of the UAW to represent them as well. With a stronger sense of collective bargaining, the UAW convinced Ford Motors agreed to labor terms for their employees. Since its creation in the 1930s, the UAW has generally been successful in negotiations. However, due to cheaper labor overseas and automated manufacturing, labor unions still struggle to ensure jobs for their members.
