The George W. Tedder Collection contains certificates and photographs documenting the careers of Judge George Tedder Sr. and Judge George Tedder Jr. The photographs include images of Judge Fred Shippey, Judge Curtis Eugene Chillingworth of Palm Beach, and a group photograph of Broward County judges. Also included are George Tedder Sr.'s award from the Florida Education Association and a photograph of him receiving the award. The certificates date from 1929 to 1948 and were given to George Tedder Sr. upon his commissions as a Circuit Judge.
- Biographical / historical:
George W. Tedder Sr. (1880-1966) was born in Madison County, Florida on January 27, 1880. He taught school from 1898 to 1903, and from 1921 to 1925 served as county judge of Madison County, where he also practiced law. In 1925 Tedder moved to Fort Lauderdale where he continued to practice law. In 1928 he defeated Circuit Judge Giblin and received his commission as a circuit court judge on June 20, 1929. George Tedder Sr. served as a Circuit Judge on the 15th Judicial Court from 1935 to 1954 when he retired. He died May 27, 1966. He had two children, Flora and George Jr.
George Tedder Jr. (1922-1999) received his law degree from the University of Florida and in 1950 married Susan Heald. From 1959 to 1961, he served as a Democratic state senator for the 13th District in Broward County. Tedder Jr. served as a Circuit Judge on the 15th Judicial Court from 1960 to 1964, as Chief Judge of the Broward Civil Court from 1977 to 1981, and retired from the bench in 1988. He died in 1999.
