Background
- Scope and content:
Hilbert Levitz's oral history discusses his childhood and teenage years growing up during the war and his career as a professor at multiple universities. His wartime memories consist of learning about Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler, his family's involvement in the war, war bonds, the Holocaust, the 1939 World's Fair, and the advancement of technology. Levitz also goes into depth about his short time in the army during the Korean War, his higher education, and computer science.
- Biographical / historical:
Hilbert Levitz was born in 1931 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania to Lithuanian parents. He is the youngest of five children, one of which enlisted with the Women's Army Corps. Like other school children, he helped spot planes and participated in war bond drives. He was drafted into the later half of the Korean War and therefore did not get sent over as he was still in basic training when the war ended. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 and taught at the United States Army Signal School. Levitz then went on to Pennsylvania State University and received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1965. From there he taught at various institutions before coming to Florida State University in 1969. Since then, Levitz has been teaching mathematics and computer science.
