Background

Scope and content:

This collection includes various documents relating to Perry's work with the NAACP and civil rights.  These documents include copies of "Along Freedom's Road," correspondence, reports, journal articles, speeches, press releases, subpoenas, and petitions.

Biographical / historical:

Ruth Willis Perry was a white civil rights activist. She served as secretary (1950-1956) and as vice-president (1957-1963) of the Miami branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She helped publicize the NAACP through her radio broadcasts on WMBM and her weekly column in the Miami Times entitled "Along Freedom's Road." During her testimony in 1957 (and again in 1958) before the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee, also known as the Johns Committee, Perry refused to relinquish NAACP membership lists or answer incriminating questions. Her civil rights activities on behalf of the NAACP threatened her career as a librarian at the Miami Beach Public Library.
