Verna Slaton-Wade (1910–2008) was born Verna White and moved from Kansas to Fort Lauderdale with her family when she was only three years old. Verna graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1921 and married J. C. Slaton in 1924. They had no children. Her husband passed away in 1982. In 1986, she married W. C. Wade, a long-time friend of the couple, but he died four years later. Verna retired as a bookkeeper at Stranahan High School and remained in her home on Miami Road, which was built in 1938.
