Background

This collection contains a single folder with an 11-page typed transcript of an oral interview with Mildred Hoffenbloom. The folder also contains a photograph of Hoffenbloom in her WAC uniform.
- Biographical / historical:
Mildred Hoffenbloom was born August 17, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As one of four daughters she chose to enlist in the Army so her family could contribute to the war effort. She joined the Army on August 28, 1942 and trained at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, before being selected for NCO school in Daytona Beach, Florida. When she was twenty-two, she went to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri as a 1st Sergeant where she had 211 women under her supervision. She voluntarily took a lesser rank as a tech sergeant to become eligible for overseas duty and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia before shipping out to England in April 1944. Hoffenbloom was stationed in London to work in Claims Division, and she volunteered to take a course in extinguishing incendiary, or "buzz," bombs. In August 1944, she landed on Omaha Beach, France and temporarily stayed in a tent-city outside of Boulogne where she met her future husband. She was assigned to work in Paris for the American Engineers as an office manager. She got married while in Paris, and remained there until V-E Day in May 1945. She returned to the United States in July 1945 and discharged from the Army.
