Background

Scope and content:

Upon receipt of the records from the Honors Office, it was noted that significant gaps occur throughout the collection, the cause of which is unknown.

Biographical / historical:

The Honors Program has long played an important role at Florida State University, and enjoys the reputation of being one of the oldest and strongest honors programs in the country. This tradition began at Florida State College for Women, the predecessor of FSU, which boasted the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Florida. The university has hosted honors societies since the 1920's and an honors program since 1940. The Honors Program at FSU is intended to help the university's most talented students develop into excellent scholars, leaders in their communities and innovators in their professions. To accomplish this goal, the program encourages students to take advantage of the special opportunities available at FSU because of its dual status as a major research university and an important contributor to the local, state, national and global communities.
