- Scope and content:
Robert H. Dodd was in the Army Air Force during World War II and served with the 459th Bombardment Group. His collection includes handwritten letters to his parents about his Air Force training in the USA and time overseas in Italy and North Africa. The collection also includes an oral history about his upbringing, time in Yugoslavia, Austria and Italy during the war and his retirement in Florida. Aerial photographs of Italian and Romanian cities and newspaper photocopies are also included.
- Biographical / historical:
Robert H. Dodd was born in 1923 to a small business owning family. Before being called to service, he studied at the University of Michigan. His Army Air Forces trainings predominantly centered around these four places: Montgomery, AL, Casper, WY, Nashville, TN and Lawrenceville, IL. He received his commission as a pilot in 1944 and was transferred overseas where he spent time in North Africa, primarily Tunis and Europe. In Europe Robert H. Dodd was stationed in northern Italy but in his letters to his parents briefly discusses his missions to Yugoslavia, Austria, and Romania. After the war he worked for Delta Airlines and retired to North Palm Beach, Florida.
