Background

Scope and content:

The Errol Elgo and Patricia Lewis Collection contains artwork by Elgo and other artists as well as household objects used in Jamaica.

Biographical / historical:

Errol Elgo Lewis was born in Kingston, Jamaica on February 24th, 1950. He earned Higher Diploma in Business and Public Administration and a Law Degree from London University. Encouraged by his wife, Patricia, and his younger sister, Dawn, he began pursuing his talent for art and exhibited multiple times in London in the early 1970s. In the 1980s, his artwork appeared in the South Florida Magazine, "Reggae Roots."

Working under the artist name "Elgo," he exhibited in Miami on numerous occasions, including at the Cocowalk in Coconut Grove. Mayor Alfonso Geraffi of the City of Lauderdale Lakes declared March 13, 1997 as "Elgo Day." In 2001, Elgo and his wife Patricia returned to his native Jamaica and opened an art gallery in Montego Bay. Several of Elgo's pieces are in Ghana, West Africa at the recently built Black Heritage Museum and at the Marcus Garvey Center in Accra.

An exhibition of his artwork was held at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in 2006. He also exhibited pieces at AARLCC in 2009.
