Background
- Scope and content:
Paul Johnson served in the Navy aboard the USS Pamanset, a fuel tanker in the Pacific Theater. This collection includes a manuscript by Johnson entitled "The Unsung Heroes of WWII: 'The Fleet Tankers': USS Pamanset AO-85". It has short recollections of Johnson's service aboard the USS Pamanset, which served in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the war, the ship helped with rescue operations after the USS Mississinewas, another fuel tanker, was destroyed by a Japanese "Kaiten" suicide submarine. The manuscript also contains photocopies of wartime and reunion photos, copies of official documents (Navy Trials/Commissioning Logs and a captain's log), and reunion meeting documents, including letters from Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In the postwar era, it visited Japan in fall 1945.
