Background
- Scope and content:
John Maiorca enlisted in 1940 in Fort Denens, MA and the commanding officer was the son of Theodore Roosevelt. By August 1943 he and his mates were shipped to England where they would form the 388th Bomb Group. On 5 November 1943 during a bombing run on Gelsenkirchen, Germany their B-17 was damaged by anti-aircraft fire and was shot down by a German fighter. He and his crew parachuted into Belgium, and were helped by several Belgian underground resistance members. He managed to take a train to Paris where the French Resistance took him in and helped him reach Spain. Once in Spain he and other "evaders" reached the British colony of Gibraltar from which he was transported back to England. Once in England he was able to take the trip back to the USA where he went on to become a flight instructor. He then goes on to recount his reunions with ex-comrades and his 1988 trip to Belgium. Numerous pictures of the people he met and places he visited are included.
