Background

Scope and content:

This collection of Civil War letters were written primarily to Nicholas W. Kneass (1840 -1896) during the first few months of his service in the 89th Regiment, 8th Calvary of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. Nicholas was one of five children of Horn Riley (H.R.) Kneass, a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, and Sarah Williamson Kneass. The family resided in the wealthy West Philadelphia suburb of Hamiltonville. The 8th Calvary was organized at Philadelphia in August 1861 under the command of Colonel Ernest Chorman. Nicholas and his brother Christian volunteered in September 1861—Nicholas as a 1st Lieutenant in Company H and Christian as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G. The regiment left Philadelphia for Washington, D.C. on October 4, 1861. During the early months of the Civil War, Christian was injured and returned home to convalesce. A few letters are addressed to Christian and Nicholas together; many contain news of Christian's recovery from his injuries. Nicholas served throughout the war, mustering out with the rank of Captain. Afterwards, Nicholas returned to his medical studies, became a doctor and practiced in Baltimore, Md.
