Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains a transcript of an interview with Raymond F. Bricker conducted by David Gregory on April 17, 1999.  It details his time in the U.S. Army from 1941 through 1945. Raymond F. Bricker served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II.

Biographical / historical:

Raymond F. Bricker served as a Technician, Fifth Grade (Sergeant) in the Army during World War II. Raymond resided in Kosciusko County, Indiana before enlisting on June 10, 1941. At the time of enlistment, Raymond was 26 years old, had 4 years of high school education and was single, without dependents. Two years later, Raymond was captured by the Germans while serving in Sicily and was sent to Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria where 3,219 other American POWs were held. Raymond's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on July 11, 1943, and the last report was made on July 21, 1945. Based on these two reports, Raymond was imprisoned for at least 741 days (2 years and ~1 months). The average duration of imprisonment was 363 days. Ultimately, Raymond was returned to military control, liberated or repatriated.  He served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and received the Purple Heart after being shot in the foot.
