Background

Scope and content:

This collection is comprised of letters from Walter A. Foelker written to his parents, siblings, and other family members during his time overseas during World War II. Many of the letters discuss everyday life on the Home Front as described by his family. Foelker served in the 44th Infantry Division. In this collection are also photocopies of photographs, a wedding announcement, and an obituary for Foelker.

Biographical / historical:

Walter A. Foelker was born on October 21, 1918, and served in the U.S. Army in the 44th Infantry Division in France, Austria, and Switzerland. He entered the Army in 1940 and was discharged in 1946. Foelker was originally from the Portland, Oregon area. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and literature at Pacific University and later returned for his master's degree. Foelker, who earned the rank of lieutenant, describes his experiences in the Army during and at the end of the war. Foelker passed away in Hillsboro, OR on June 14, 1995.
