Background

Scope and content:

The Wendy Wangberg collection documents the development of Galt Ocean Mile in Fort Lauderdale during the 1970s and 1980s. It contains 274 photographs featuring imges of high-rise residential buildings, commercial storefronts, and tourist-related infrastructures. It also contains 3 contact sheets of aerials, 1 8x10 photograph of Coral Ridge properties building, 1 contact sheet of map and photograph of small building, and 1 CD with six images of Margate, Florida in the 1950s, including the welcome sign and the gas station.

Biographical / historical:

The development of Galt Ocean Mile began in the 1920s when Arthur T. Galt (1876–1968), a Chicago attorney and law partner of Hugh Taylor Birch, acquired 8,000 acres of local land. While Galt sold the majority of his holdings to Coral Ridge Properties in the 1940s—forming much of modern-day Oakland Park and the Coral Ridge neighborhood—he retained a one-mile parcel of oceanfront property. In 1953, Galt sold this remaining tract to developers James S. Hunt and Stephen A. Calder for $19.3 million. At the time, this transaction was recognized as the largest residential real estate sale in United States history and laid the foundation for the high-rise development documented in the Wangberg Collection.

Wendy Wangberg (1942–2021) was a professional photographer, historian, and archivist dedicated to the preservation of Broward County history. Appointed to the Broward County Historical Commission in 2009 by Mayor Stacy Ritter, Wangberg served the City of Coral Springs as its official historian. Beyond her municipal roles, she was a founding member of the Gold Coast Archivists and held memberships in the Society of Florida Archivists, the Florida Association of Museums, and the American Association of State and Local History. She contributed a monthly history column to The Forum newspaper and received the Broward County Historical Commission Historian's Award (2004) and the Judge L. Clayton Nance Memorial Award (2005) for her service to the community.

In 2004, Wangberg donated a collection of photographs documenting the commercial architecture of Galt Ocean Mile, a prominent beachfront strip in Fort Lauderdale situated between Oakland Park and Commercial Boulevards.
