Background
- Scope and content:
This collection relates to Walter A. Holle, Second Lieutenant who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a spotter pilot and served in the European Theater with 5th Army Headquarters. Holle participated in the Battles of Salerno and Anzio. This collection contains a manuscript memoir, document, and Compact Disk containing scans of the materials.
- Biographical / historical:
Walter A. Holle was born on October 22, 1919, in Union Township, Adams County, IN. Holle relates his experiences on active duty at home (November 1941-October 1942), abroad (November 1942-October 1945), and in the reserves (1945-1953). Holle was drafted on November 13, 1941, and began his training at the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center at Ft. Bragg from 1941-1942. He was then moved to Army headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he mainly performed clerical work. In August 1942, he was transferred to Ft. Sill, OK where he began flight training in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He then traveled to New York to travel by ship to Lundershall, England, where he continued to train and flew two ferrying missions. He was then sent to North Africa where he continued training. Eventually, he was assigned to the 5th Army Headquarters and would complete flights in North Africa. In 1943, he arrived in Salerno, Italy, as part of the invasion. Holle remained in Italy, working in various locations and was in the country when Rome fell in 1944. During the summer of 1944, Holle moved frequently. It was also during this time that he met his brother, Paul A. Holle, who recalled their meeting by chance at the 5th Army Headquarters. Holle remained in Italy until 1945 when he returned to Boston, MA before being sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and eventually home to Decatur, Indiana. Holle recounts these experiences in detail in his booklet, as well as information about his time in the reserves. There is also a laminated paper containing a story from Paul A. Holle about their reunion in Italy; the other side of the paper contains photographs of the brothers. The collection also contains a CD. Holle passed away on April 13, 2005 in Decatur, IN.
