Background
- Scope and content:
This collection consists of documents from the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, reports related to the incorporation and historical preservation efforts of the city of Brandon, reports on the history of Brandon and Hillsborough County schools, materials related to the "Our Town Histories" project, and contemporary and historic photographs of people and places from Brandon. The majority of these materials were created in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, although some photographs are from as early as the 1890s.
- Biographical / historical:
Brandon, Florida was founded after John William Brandon arrived with his family and seven enslaved people in 1857 to the community then known as New Hope. Brandon would go on to donate land for the local Methodist Church and cemetary before his death in 1886. After the completion of a railroad line which connected New Hope to Plant City and Tampa, the community's population grew, and Victoria Brandon, John Brandon's widow, contracted a surveyor to plat around forty acres of land near the new railway. In 1890, the surveyor named the new area for Brandon. By 1920, Brandon's population was nearly 500, and the expansion of today's State Road 60 in the 1950s led to a population boom of around 5000. The area has continued to grow and as of 2020, the population has grown to 114,626.
