Biographical / historical:

The Child of the Sun Jazz Festival was a free concert series open to the general public and sponsered by Florida Southern College. It was held each spring in conjunction with the Festival of Fine Arts. Child of the Sun — named for the architectural theme of the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings on campus — was closely associated for many years with the late cornetist Nat Adderley, who lived in Lakeland. Adderley helped professor Larry Burke organize the festivals and performed at them with his quintet until 1998. He died in 2000. The festival was discontinued by the college in 2008 due to costs.
