- Biographical / historical:
Calvin T. Webb was born April 15th, 1924, in Hinckley, Utah, the third child of Leslie and Nellie Rachel Thacker Webb. "Cal" grew up working on the family farm and attending school in Hinckley, UT. He graduated from Hinckley High in 1942 and then attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan. Calvin joined the U.S. Maritime Service in April of 1944. He trained as a radio operator in Boston, MA, and Catalina Island, CA, prior to serving aboard merchant ships in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans until December of 1946.
After World War II he married Carol Halgren of Tooele on November 6th, 1946, in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. They had three children. Before starting what would become a career with the U.S. Civil Service, he held many jobs including Radio Operator for United Airlines at the Salt Lake City airport. With the U.S. government, he worked for the Department of the Army at Dugway Proving Grounds and Tooele Army Depot in Utah, Fort Wainwright, AK, and Naha, Okinawa. He retired in 1980 from the National Guard in Salt Lake City, UT. Later, he worked for a few years as Project Manager at Canyon Cove senior housing in Tooele.
Cal was an honest, generous, dependable, talented and very hard-working man with a reputation for selflessness and humility. His attitude was that if someone else could do something, then so could he. He enjoyed the challenge of repairing automobiles, and knew how to do and fix almost everything else, too. His lifetime fascination with aviation led him to pursue a private pilot license, purchase a small plane and take flying lessons from Frank Eastman. The day he flew solo was one of the highlights of his life.
