Background
- Scope and content:
This transcript pertains to Joseph E. Peel, a gunner's mate who served aboard the USS Antietam starting in 1944. While the transcribed interview includes Peel's testimony on the latter years of World War II, it mostly details his experiences attending college after the war under the benefits of the GI Bill.
- Biographical / historical:
Joseph E. Peel was born on March 7, 1928 in Chipley, Florida. After graduating high school in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following boot camp training and gunnery school in Maryland, he served as a gunner's mate aboard an aircraft carrier, the USS Antietam, in the Philippines. Peel was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and began his studies with the Tallahassee Branch of the University of Florida (under the assistance of the G.I. Bill) in 1947. After graduating in March of 1950, Peel married his wife Sally in 1952 and went on to work for the insurance firm Crawford and Company for the next 38 years. Joseph Peel passed away on October 21, 2010. He is buried at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Tampa, FL.
