Background

Scope and content:

The Montgomery Family Papers contain personal and professional correspondence, clippings, publications, photographs, 2 scrapbooks, 4 diaries, 7 videotapes, and 1 yearbook. This collection contains the documents and possessions of several generations of Montgomery family members. Included are items belonging to Katherine W. Montgomery, her sisters Anne B. The collection was primarily gathered after Katherine's death and contains mostly materials commemorating her achievements. Included are photographs, videotapes, speeches, and publications from Florida State University events that commemorated Katherine. The collection contains a large amount of material from the 1998 Emeritus Alumni Society Weekend at Florida State University.

She returned to the Department of Physical Education at FSCW and continued to make lasting contributions to the women's athletic program. She led the Physical Education department for more than 30 years, was president of the Athletic Association, and developed Florida State College for Women's intramural athletic program. She designed the women's gymnasium, developed a curriculum in physical education, created the first synchronized swimming program, and wrote a book on Women's Volleyball. Katherine never married. She died in 1958 on the first day of her retirement. This collection includes items gathered by two of Katherine's sisters, Mamie Lila Montgomery (1897-1987) and Anne Bingham Montgomery (-1932), also FSCW graduates, and her nephew, Edwin F.
