- Biographical / historical:
In March 1926, Edna Kitteridge (1904-1976) was in the production of "Fountania." The venue, Pueblo Feliz, was completely destroyed in the 1926 hurricane.
Edna received her teaching certificate in 1925 from the Gorham Normal School (now the University of Southern Maine). She was recruited that same year by her Uncle Clint D. Kittredge, Fort Lauderdale's mayor, to be one of the town's first elementary teachers. On May 7, 1927 she married local resident James Wallace Jacobs. Her sister Harriet Kitteridge married James L. Meeks, and they also resided in Fort Lauderdale.
Edna was an educator for 30 years, teaching at the Southside, Westside and Central Schools before serving as Principal of both the Westside and Lauderdale Manors schools.
After her retirement in 1964, Edna was instrumental in organizing the local chapter of the Broward County Retired Educator's Association, serving as its first president and continuing as an active member for many years. She was named a "Broward County Pioneer" by the Broward County Historical Commission in 1979.
