Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of nine letters from Henry T. Wright to his sister, Laura (Mrs. A. F. Yniestra of Greenville, Alabama). Two were written prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, six were dated during the conflict, and the last one after the war ended. The letters are written from the following locations: Knox Hill, Florida; Tullahoma, Tennessee; Camp near Fairfield; Jackson, Mississippi; Camp near Chickamauga; Pensacola, Florida.

Biographical / historical:

Henry T. Wright, 2nd Lt., New 1st Florida Infantry, Company E, serving under Captain Alexander Bethune McLeod. Wright was born November 11, 1842 in Pensacola, Florida. He attended Knox Hill Academy near De Funiak Springs, Florida. He enlisted at Camp Walton in March of 1862. He was promoted to Captain of the Commissary in August of 1862. Wright was wounded and admitted to Way Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi on January 14, 1865 and was paroled in Greensboro, North Carolina in May 1865. He died in February 1899 and is buried in St. Johns Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
