Background
- Scope and content:
Betty S. and husband John Gilson were both medical doctors in residence in Cleveland, Ohio until John was called on active duty in the Navy. The letters in this collection were exchanged from 1944-1945 and discuss his experience in the Navy as well has her struggles on the homefront with balancing child care and professional duties while her husband served away in the U.S. Navy.
- Biographical / historical:
According to a letter from Betty Gilson accompanying the collection, after graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in March 1943, the Gilsons went on to medical residency in Cleveland at Western Reserve University, Lakeside Hospital. John Gilson's service in the Navy Reserve was deferred until he completed his training, after which he was called to active duty and assigned as ship doctor on the USS Lindenwald, a Landing Ship Dock (LSD). John's letters are from training at Corona Del Mar, the USS Lindenwald, and from Aiea Heights Naval Hospital, Honolulu. Meanwhile, Betty Gilson remained home to care for two children, continued her residency, and conducted laboratory research on malaria and psittacosis.
