Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of three folders: a family ancestry chart, an undated four-page manuscript titled "Memories of Childhood in my Ancestral Community," and a 56-page manuscript titled "I Remember Providence." The manuscripts are Wilma's childhood memories of growing up in a small rural community in northeast Florida during the early twentieth century.

Biographical / historical:

Wilma Walker McQueen was born in September 1904 at the Walker Family homestead called "Providence," just south of the Saint Marys River in Nassau County, Florida. Her great-grandfather, Samuel Walker (1806-1889) settled in the area that became known as Walker's Landing in the 1820s. After the death of Wilma's father, John William Walker (1874-1920), the family moved to Jacksonville. Several years later "Providence" burned to the ground. Most of the Walker Family is buried at the Pigeon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery nearby.
