Background
- Scope and content:
The papers of Harvey Glick contains a transcript that was provided by the Reichelt Program for Oral History. Harvey Glick served with the 63rd Infantry Division in the European theater during World War II.
- Biographical / historical:
Harvey Glick was a Jewish American serviceman who was drafted in 1944 into the U.S. Army and sent to infantry basic training school at Camp Walters, Texas. Because he was only eighteen years old, he was not sent overseas immediately, but remained at Camp Vardon, Mississippi, in Company L, 253rd Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. He talks about the living conditions and entertainment while there. Eventually, he was shipped to Marseilles, France on December 8, 1944, and his unit replaced the 42nd Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He gives a detailed description of the confusion accompanying his first days of combat experience, the harsh winter conditions, and how his unit went without supplies because of a loss of communication. He was in combat until April 29, 1945, leading raids and taking German towns such as Bach. He was in Paris, France on a 3-day leave when V-E day arrived. After the war, he joined the SignalCorps and worked in Germany for a number of months. He discusses his feelings while in Germany as Jewish American serviceman. He returned to the states in April of 1946.
