- Biographical / historical:
The blueprints, site plans, and architectural drawings in this collection were created and used by Frank Lloyd Wright, Nils M. Schweitzer, Robert Law Weed, and others during the design and construction of Florida Southern College's Lakeland campus. When FSC first moved to Lakeland in 1922, two permanant brick buildings were constructed: E.E. Edge Hall and Joseph Reynolds Hall. In the 1930s, Alan Spivey Hall, the Fannin Building, and Gilbert Gymnaseum were constructed, as well as a few other campus features. In 1938, looking to make a spash and put the college "on the map," President Ludd M. Spivey sent a telegram to Frank Lloyd Wright, inviting him to build a "Great Temple of Education." Wright accepted, and over the next twenty years designed nineteen buildings and structures, twelve of which were built.
In the late 1940s Orlando-based architect Nils M. Schweitzer, who had been trained by Wright, became the site manager. He went on to design several more buildings for the college during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including the impressive Bishop John Branscomb Auditorium.
Miami architect Robert Law Weed designed much of the east side of campus, including veterans' dormitories, the Herbert E. Wolfe Building, and the Panhellenic Dorms.
