Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of an oral history interview transcript of Rene Perez, who lived in Cuba during WWII. Also present at the interview were his wife, Anita Perez, his daughter-in-law LouAnn Quintana, and son-in-law José Quintana. The original tape is in Spanish and the transcription is in English.

Biographical / historical:

Rene Perez, who lived in Cuba during the war, is interviewed by Alejandro Quintana, and they discuss rationing, particularly gas and tires, and the American airbase ('La Cayuga') located nearby from the family farm in the town of Chorrera Del Calvario. This airbase known colloquially as La Cayuga is in fact San Antonio de los Baños Airfield. Perez briefly mentions that his father ran a starch factory that shipped to Haifa, but this was discontinued when the ship was sunk, presumably by a German U-boat. The interview is very short, and details are light as Perez was only nine years old at the time.
