Background
- Scope and content:
The Tina Bucuvalas collection primarily consists of audio cassette recordings of oral histories from members of the Greek community in Tarpon Springs, as well as recordings of music and events from the community. The collection also contains plans for fishing vessels and relevant publications from Bucuvalas' work in preserving Florida folklife and folk art.
- Biographical / historical:
Tina Bucuvalas earned a master's degree in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a doctorate in Folklore from Indiana University. She began working at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, now HistoryMiami, where she established the South Florida Folklife Center. She served as State Folklorist for Florida from 1996 to 2009, where she documented Florida's traditional cultures.
Bucuvalas later receieved a Fullbright Scholarship to study public folklife in Greece, which fueled her interest in Florida's Greek community. In 2009, she was hired as the Curator of Arts and Historical Resources for the City of Tarpon Springs. Bucuvalas spearheaded efforts to integrate folklife into historic preservation of the area, resulting in the listing of Eatonville and Rose Hill Cemetaries in the National Register of Historic Places and a traditional cultural designation for Tarpon Springs' Greektown Historic District.
