Background
- Scope and content:
This collection relates to Private First Class Roger Luther Peters who served with the 1143rd Engineer Combat Group in the European Theater during World War II. The collection contains three short memoirs.
- Biographical / historical:
Roger Luther Peters was born on August 24, 1923, in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa, to Luther Peters and Emelia C Larson (Peters). Peters entered the U.S. Army on December 11, 1942, in Iowa City, IA. He served with the 1143rd Engineer Combat Group in Europe under the Ninth Army.
Most notably, in November 1944, the 1143rd was tasked with supervising the Army Stream Crossing School that taught the necessary skills for units in preparation for the Rhine River crossing. In order to train units for this operation, the school was established on the Maas River in the vicinity of Roermond and Maeseyck. The school taught all skills required from construction of bridges to operation of all watercraft to be utilized. The school operated continuously until March 1945 when the allies began crossing the Rhine River. In the spring and summer of 1945, the 1143rd was also attached to the British 2nd Army and the 18th Airborne Corps. In late 1945, the 1143rd was stationed in the Department of Marne, France. Peters continues to live in Nebraska.
