ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Anticommunism organizations emerged with the beginning of the Cold War and especially after Senator Joseph L. McCarthy launched his "Red War" hearings in the early 1950s. These organizations saw communist threats in the flouridation of drinking water, the United Nations, the United World Federalist movement, in the Presidential campaign of 1960 and election of John F. Kennedy, in the Cuba Missile Crisis of 1962, and in the civil rights and unrest in the 1964-1965 period. The organizations also included a Christian rightwing movement of extreme conservatism, mixing Biblical prophecy and a Communist threat.

Gerald L. K. (Gerald Lyman Kenneth) Smith (1898- ) was founder of the American First Party, head of the Christian Nationalist Crusade, and outspoken antisemite. His papers and records are at the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The Cinema Educational Guild grew out of era of the McCarthy hearings on communists in the movie industry. CEG was an anticommunist organization headquartered in Hollywood.
