Scope and content:

This collection consists of correspondence and official records related to the service of Theodore Oxman in the Army Air Force in World War II. The collection also contains two photographs of Oxman and a book documenting the personnel and mission of the Grenada Army Air Field in Grenada, Mississippi.

Biographical / historical:

Theodore Oxman was born in New York City on February 13, 1915 and graduated in 1932 from Stuyvesant High School in New York City. Prior to entering the service, Oxman resided in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a purchasing agent for Interstate Department Stores from 1933-1942. On November 11, 1942 Oxman entered the Army Air Force. After completing basic training, Oxman attended an eight week course in Administrative and Supply at Eastern Oklahoma A and M College in Wilburton, Oklahoma. Oxman served at Grenada Army Air Field (Mississippi) in the Special Services Section with responsibility for overseeing recreational programs for the base. His duties included budgeting and supervising personnel needed to maintain the theater, service clubs, personal affairs section, rest camp, and Saturday night dances organized by the USO. One of the highlights of his army air force was arranging for the performance of Guy Lombardo and his band at Grenada. After leaving Grenada, Oxman oversaw an officer's mess at a B-29 base in Texas. Oxman was discharged on December 4, 1945 at Fort Bliss, Texas with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Initially after the war, Oxman continued working in the retail sector, but in 1951 became a stock broker. Oxman passed away on April 1, 2014 and is buried at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
