Background

Scope and content:

This collection features memorabilia, photographs, and documents spanning two generations of the Llaneza and Llaneras families, beginning with Delfin Llaneza, Sr. and Miguel Llaneras. The bulk of the materials, however, pertain to Delphin Jr. Llaneza and his wife, Violet Marie Llaneras Hagler Llaneza, both natives of Ybor City who served in the military during World War II.

Biographical / historical:

Delphin Jr. Llaneza was born on October 9, 1917, in Tampa. He attended Hillsborough High School and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he specialized in cartooning and illustration. A World War II veteran, he served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Wakefield. He was honorably discharged after participating in the evacuation of Singapore and Java shortly before they fell to Japanese forces. After the war, he worked as a commercial artist and, in October 1947, married Violet at the Ybor City Presbyterian Church. They had one daughter, Desiree McFaddin. He was the son of Delfin Llaneza Sr. (1880–1970) and Matilde Campo Llaneza (1898–1968). His father, a native of Asturias, Spain, was a founding member of the Centro Asturiano club.

Violet Marie Llaneras Hagler Llaneza was born on March 27, 1923, in Tampa. She graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, attended Havana University, and served two years in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. After the war, she worked as a beautician and instructor until her retirement in 2005. In 1947, she married Delphin Llaneza Jr. She was the daughter of Miguel (Manuel) Llaneras and Rosalia Scaglione Llaneras (1900–1996). Miguel Llaneras was appointed as the superintendent of the Cuban Senate, Havana in 1908. Rosalia, born in Alessandria della Rocca, later worked as a cigar maker for the Santella Cigar Company in Tampa.
