Scope and content:

The Graham Family Collection contains personal papers, photographs, and postcards belonging to the Graham family of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Photographs depict Arthur A. Graham's home, 1926 hurricane, buildings, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and South Florida beaches. Personal papers include methodist church pamphlets, Arthur A. Graham's obituary, and military records of Francis "Sam" Graham. The collection also contains Sam Graham's WWII Army helmet.

Biographical / historical:

Arthur A. Graham (1881-1965) originated from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, but lived in Ft. Lauderdale for 42 years before his death in 1965. He was survived by his widow, Bessie (Conkle) Graham (1885-1969); two sons, including Francis "Sam" Graham of Ft. Lauderdale (1917-1990) and Raymond W. "Doc" Graham , and a daughter, Ruth V. Graham of Ft. Lauderdale; one brother, seven grandchildren and three great grand-children.

Francis "Sam" Graham (1917-1990), Arthur A. Graham's son, joined the U.S. Army (Private 1st Class, Company "F", 124th Infantry) in 1942 and was discharged in 1945 after the end of Word War II. He was wounded during the Battle of Aachen in October 1944. He was decorated with the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal, and a Bronze Battle Star for the Normandy Campaign.

Acquisition information:
Mille Graham (wife of Sam Graham) donated the materials to the Broward County Historical Commission on February 21, 1991 (Accession BCHA-1991.9). Sam Graham donated additional materials on January 19, 1994 (Accession BCHA-1994.20).
