Biographical / historical:

William A. Hicks (1885-1940) was born around 1885 in Oneida County, New York. He moved to Palatka and then to Dade County where he worked under Dade County Sheriff Dan Hardie. In 1922 he moved to Fort Lauderdale and was appointed Chief Deputy by Sheriff under Broward County Sheriff Paul C. Bryan.

In 1925 Hicks murdered Robert Reese Barber, an inmate at the Broward County Jail who was often on release building houses in Progresso. In 1927 Hicks was arrested and found guilty of the murder. In 1929 the Hicks' verdict was reversed, after which Hicks moved to Utica, New York where he served as City Marshall until his death in 1940.
